"The ABC's of Social Media - Teacher Edition"

First Impression:

Teachers and social media are like oil and water in my opinion, due to the fact that some teachers mostly ban the use of social media or devices in their classes or anywhere in the school, and others use it to their advantage. But honestly though, I don't see if teachers, all of them rather, truly understand technology and social media.

Quote:

"Anyone who stands in front of classrooms full of people with access to Google is going to want to limit the amount of information about themselves on the Web."

Reflection Proper:

Teachers are odd in many ways, as I learned throughout experience; they are being paid to teach us certain information, but they are not trusted to speak freely sometimes about it, due to certain facts like some materials are regulated or censored, and things such as exams and lesson plans are designed by bureaucrats or administrator. In other words, when it comes to learning about the world, there are certain "regulations" to it --- which is also linked to the online world, in this way: all of us are limited to know about such things when it comes to dealing with the online world. Personally though, the way I see these sort of things is kind of biased: I mean, sure, it is right to put a lid on certain information that may be inappropriate when it comes to teachers and their students especially on students' age and grade (elementary, high school, or college level) but there are exceptions to be known or rather when it comes to "regulating information", teachers or instructors should know exactly what to teach correctly, and more importantly, to let their students know the differences on what is right and wrong with the world. When it comes to the subject of social media, it gets a bit complex in my opinion. For one,as I learned via reading the essay, some teachers abuse social media or the use of digital communication, or rather they don't exactly become examples of "sound-like best practices of using technology and applications and the Internet correctly". This kind of applies to students in fact, as in somewhat it applies the idea that teachers are not teaching students exactly what to do correctly online, especially since they regulated some information or banned some websites that may be serve as valuable examples on what is right and wrong with the web. In my personal opinion about this thing, I suggest that people should know what is right and wrong when it comes to teaching information, and sure, they mean well when it comes to censoring some information, but they should know that sometimes regulating and censoring information is not enough to let people know about the world: they should know everything about it, and what is right and wrong about it, whether in the online world or not; and furthermore, everyone, including teachers, should work out on ways on how to handle social media correctly and use it in the most productive, interactive, and non-harmful way especially with students.

5 Things Learned From Article:

  1. I learned about social media when it comes to teachers using them.

  2. I learned that social media rules for teachers often go much further than simply applying the discretion of rule-of-thumb.

  3. I learned that there are limits and regulations when it comes to being taught certain information, but that doesn't stop people from finding a loophole around it and never realizing that what they are doing may be harmful.

  4. I learned that everyone should sit down and work out certain ways on how to handle information correctly and use social media, and not to mention teaching certain information and knowing one's limits in regulating and censoring it.

  5. I learned that teachers should use social media to help them in teaching their lessons to students and to productively interact with them in ways that they can become civilized individuals on the Web.

5 Integrative Questions:

  1. What's your opinion on teachers using social media nowadays?

  2. Do you ever think about that teachers or rather individuals that teach us many things about the world are not teaching us enough about right and wrong?

  3. How do you feel about teachers abusing social media?

  4. What do you think about the thought of social media guidelines not aimed at helping teachers communicate?

  5. How does one such as you tend to take action on the issues regarding social media, teachers, and students alike?
